INTRODUCTION
Naturally the material for this small book comes from a number of sources. However, much of the general information comes from the Authors' own pool of knowledge (or cesspool, as you may prefer).
It isn't widely recognized that the production-of alcoholic beverages is absolutely prohibited in some countries and that bootlegging flourishes in these places in much the same manner that it once did (and still does to a certain extent) in the United States. In Saudi Arabia, for instance, it is absolutely prohibited on religious grounds. Most of the techniques, methods and recipes included herein are the result of patient trial-and-error experiments on the part of these various clandestine operators - regardless of the country of their origin. Many of these techniques have been modernized to take advantage of new materials on the market today, but essentially are the same basic methods employed by many old "pot-brewers".
We know of no publication in print that attempts to record this knowledge and pass it on in an easy-to-understand fashion to those who may be interested. Probably the reason for this is that the subject of alcohol, like sex, is under a cloud of taboo, carefully placed there by some fundamentalists and many government agents who - quite understandably - would like to keep their respective jobs as simple as possible.
Although this book has been put together with a certain amount of light-heartedness, the stills depicted and the recipes and methods outlined have a 11 been built and used, at one time or another and in one country or another and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, produced excellent results. However, the authors of this book assume no responsibility for the accuracy or usage - proper or improper - of the information presented.
The three authors of this book (with three the odds are three times as good that one will be sober enough to write) have tried to present the material in an entertaining manner. With a little effort and a lot of luck it is usually possible to write a book that is both fun to read and informative. We've made the effort. Now for the luck.
